Adverse winds and gusts
Adverse winds (AWH 10.7). Takeoff and landing most exposed:
- Crosswind
- Gusts
- Tailwind
- Variable wind
- Sudden wind shift
- Wind shear
- Mountain wind hazards
Gust effects (AWH 10.7.2):
| Phase | Airspeed and lift | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gust blowing | Increase | May briefly balloon up |
| Gust ends | Drop suddenly | Aircraft sinks |
Trap: headwind is not an adverse wind; tailwind is (AWH 10.7).
