Aircraft brakes
On many aircraft, each main wheel has its own independent brake.
Independent brakes give (TP 1102 ch.1 Brakes):
- Directional control on the ground at speeds too low for the rudder to work
- Can shorten the landing roll
Pedal effect:
| Pedal pressed | Wheel braked | Aircraft turns |
|---|---|---|
| Left | Left | Left |
| Right | Right | Right |
Straight stop: equal or near equal pressure on both pedals. Unequal pressure turns toward the more-braked wheel.
Trap: braking harder on one side to fix a swerve, without matching the other pedal, steers further off.
