Parking and securing an aircraft
Parking surface:
| Surface | Problem |
|---|---|
| Icy or slippery (avoid) | Wind can move aircraft despite brakes; wheels can slide forward against brakes during start or run-up |
| Soft ground (park on firm ground) | Aircraft settles; very difficult to move under own power |
Overheated brakes (after heavy braking):
- Parking brake set right away can self-release as brakes cool.
- Wait for brakes to cool, or chock both main wheels front and back before leaving aircraft.
Tie-down (rope or line to weights, pickets, or ground anchors, per AFM) when:
- Parked for any length of time.
- High winds exist or are forecast.
Securing order, in addition to any tie-down:
- Secure flight controls in cockpit.
- Set parking brake; chock ahead and behind each main wheel.
- Install pitot tube cover.
- Install exterior control locks, where fitted.
Trap: parking brake set right after heavy braking instead of chocking or waiting; it self-releases as brakes cool.
