Checklists and airmanship
Airmanship: applying flying knowledge, skill, and experience to foster safe, efficient flying. Acquired through experience and knowledge (TC AIM AIR 1.1).
Vital action checks (TC AIM AIR 1.2):
- Accidents directly attributed to lack of proper checks
- Pretakeoff, prelanding, other necessary checks: perform with care
Checklist source (TC AIM AIR 1.2):
- Transport Canada does not prescribe a standard checklist
- Strongly recommends owners equip aircraft with the manufacturer's recommended checklist
Good checklist for an aircraft type:
| Aspect | Good | Not |
|---|---|---|
| Content | Only relevant items for that type | Generic list; full maintenance-manual dump |
| Order | Orderly sequence, per cockpit layout | Alphabetical; random |
Trap: no government standard checklist; manufacturer's checklist recommended.
