Climb speed selection (Vx vs Vy)
| Speed | Name | Greatest height gain per | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vy | Best rate of climb | Time | Reaching altitude quickly |
| Vx | Best angle of climb | Distance | Most height cleared in least ground distance |
Default rule:
- Climb at Vy until safe height.
- Obstacle in flight path: Vx instead.
Engine cooling:
- Vx and Vy usually slower than normal climb speed.
- Less cooling airflow: cylinder temperatures higher.
- Use only as needed, then return to normal climb speed.
Trap: Vx/Vy commonly swapped: angle (Vx) = distance (obstacle); rate (Vy) = time (get up quickly).
