Cockpit control categories
Cockpit control groups (four named groups plus instrument panel, TP 1102 Ex.2):
| Group | Contents |
|---|---|
| Flight controls | Control column, rudder pedals |
| Throttle | Power control |
| Ancillary controls | Mixture control, carburettor heat control |
| Environmental controls | Windshield defogger, heating and ventilation |
| Instrument panel | Flight instruments, engine instruments, navigation instruments |
Throttle (TP 1102):
- Forward: power up. Back: power down.
- Most have a friction device holding the setting when released.
Environmental control detail:
- Cabin heat: ram air (air entering an inlet from forward motion) ducted into cabin (TP 1102).
- Many aircraft: separate control admits outside air to cool cabin in hot weather (TP 1102).
- Windshield fog while taxiing, holding at takeoff position, or in run-ups: crack door or window slightly to circulate air. Close and latch both before takeoff.
Trap: mixture and carb heat are ancillary, not environmental; defogger and heating/vent are environmental, not ancillary.
