The DECIDE model
The DECIDE model is a six-step continuous loop for working an in-flight problem.
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| Detect | Recognize a change, or an expected change that did not happen |
| Estimate | Rank problem's risk. Same problem ranks higher under workload (IMC, turbulence, busy ATC clearance). Overreaction and fixation can exclude a safe outcome |
| Choose | Problem and impact known: decide desired outcome and course of action |
| Identify | Plan one or more solutions reaching the outcome. Do not fixate on the process |
| Do | Select most suitable solution, carry it out |
| Evaluate | Check result. If wrong, repeat |
- Factors feeding the decision: PAVE risk categories (see
aeronautics/pave-checklist).
Time needed vs not:
| Mode | When | How |
|---|---|---|
| DECIDE, 5P, 3P | Time to gather and analyze information | Analytical |
| Automatic (also naturalistic) | No time, e.g. emergency loaded with uncertainty | Reflexive, built on training and experience: recognize familiar pattern, take first workable option, no comparing every alternative |
Trap: DECIDE, 5P, 3P are analytical; automatic is no fourth model, only the fallback when none of the three has time.
