IMSAFE = pilot self-check of fitness to fly (TC AIM RPA 3.2.7, Table 3.2). "Yes" to any item: likely not fit to fly.
| Letter | Item | Check | Cite / see |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Illness | Any illness that could impair duties | |
| M | Medication | Any drug (over-the-counter, prescription or recreational) that impairs | |
| S | Stress | Personal or professional matters that distract or impair | |
| A | Alcohol | Any alcohol in the look-back window | RPA 3.2.7; limits: see Alcohol & drugs |
| F | Fatigue | Tired, or without sufficient rest in previous 24 hours | RPA 3.2.7 |
| E | Eating and drinking | Adequately fed and hydrated | RPA 3.2.7 |
Fatigue:
- As dangerous as drugs or alcohol for impairment, often harder to detect (RPA 3.2.7).
- Causes, effects, cure: see Fatigue and sleep.
Medication (AIR 3.10):
- Impairing drug not cleared by a Civil Aviation Medical Examiner (CAME): treat like alcohol. When in doubt, do not fly.
- See Medication and drugs (fitness to fly), Self-grounding duty (fitness to fly).
Fitness (AIR 3.1):
- No precise regulation or pre-flight inspection determines fitness.
- In flight, pilot must not have a condition impairing alertness, reaction time or decision-making ability.
- Before each flight: use common sense, judgement and training.
- In doubt: consult a physician or CAME.
Trap: E is Eating and drinking, not "Emotion".
