Open door, window, or panel: effects and latch checks
Aircraft stays controllable. Can open in any phase of flight.
Effects (some aircraft):
- Increased drag
- Loss of lift
- Adverse stability
Also: noise and buffeting disconcert.
Latches:
- No visible sign of being unsecured
- Usually no cockpit warning device
- Can be overlooked if pilot distracted during pre-flight checks
- Check on walk-around, not in the air
Trap: main danger is distraction, which can degrade control, not the open door.
