Runway numbering & taxiway markings
Runway number (TP 1102):
- Take magnetic heading.
- Round to nearest ten degrees.
- Drop last digit.
| Item | Example |
|---|---|
| Heading to number | 093 rounds to 090, runway 09 |
| Opposite end | 18 different: 09 pairs with 27 |
| Number to bearing | number × 10: 27 = 270 degrees magnetic |
| Compass band | runway 14 = 135 to 144 degrees (rounds to 140) |
Terms:
- Runway heading: centreline direction, magnetic or true, not the painted number (TC AIM GEN 5.1).
- "Button": informal, no official definition. Runway-end point where aircraft position for takeoff with full length available (TP 1102).
Taxiway vs runway markings (TP 1102):
| Marking | Colour | Width |
|---|---|---|
| Runway | White | Wider |
| Taxiway centre line | Yellow | 6 inches, narrow |
| Taxiway holding point | Yellow | 6 inches, narrow |
- Holding-point line pattern: see
air-law/holding-position-markings.
Intersection (INTXN) (TC AIM GEN 5.1), either:
- Point on earth where two or more position lines intersect. Lines: true bearings from an NDB, radials from a VOR, airway/RNAV-route centrelines, localizers, DME distances.
- Point where two runways, a runway and a taxiway, or two taxiways cross or meet.
Trap: number is not heading. Runway 27 is 270 degrees, not 27. Runway markings white, taxiway yellow, never reversed; painted centre line/holding-point line is not the taxiway edge marker, a physical yellow-green-yellow post (see air-law/aerodrome-boundary-markers).
