Advisory survival preparation
Carry a basic survival manual matched to the flight area (TC AIM AIR 4.14).
Training:
- No bush experience, winter or summer: get survival training before flying that terrain.
- Above tree line: more specialized training than general bush training.
Hypothermia (AIP Canada GEN 1.5 Table 1.5.1):
- Keep dry and out of the wind to prevent death.
- Possible in every season if wet and unable to get out of the wind.
- Even in a BC interior winter, most deaths occur well above freezing.
- Insulate from ground: cold ground draws heat from body.
Basic techniques (AIP Canada GEN 1.5 Table 1.5.1):
| Need | Rule |
|---|---|
| Shelter | From wind first; in winter, sleeping bag needs wind protection most |
| Fire | Make with shelter; warm fuel to burn |
| Water | Purification tablets, pharmacist-prescribed method, or boil in a container over a fire |
Food (TC AIM AIR 4.14):
- No longer a critical survival item; carrying it is the pilot's or operator's choice.
- Reason: SARSAT/COSPAS satellite detection and more reliable ELTs greatly improve chances of early detection and location of survivors.
Trap: advisory preparation (training, manual), not the mandatory CAR 602.61 survival equipment (fire, shelter, water, signalling) on board.
