Runway surface markings
Painted markings beyond runway numbers (TC AIM AGA 5).
| Marking | Description | Cite |
|---|---|---|
| Threshold | Lines across full runway width at each end, parallel to centreline; mark runway start | TP 1102 |
| Centre-line | Down runway length; 100 ft dashes, 100 ft gaps; directional guide, depth-perception aid | TP 1102 |
| Aiming point | White; first 20% of runway; 150-400 m from threshold by ARC or declared LDA; mandatory at certified aerodromes by ARC/AGN | AGA 5.4 |
| Stopway/blast pad chevrons | Yellow; over full length once paved area exceeds 60 m; not available for taxiing, initial take-off roll, landing rollout | AGA 5.4.2 |
| Displaced threshold arrows | Pavement before threshold usable for taxiing, take-off, landing roll-out from opposite direction | AGA 3.5 |
Touchdown zone (TDZ):
- Extent: first 3,000 ft or first third of runway, whichever is less, from threshold in landing direction (AIM GEN 5.1).
- Marking: white stripe pairs symmetric about centreline, spaced 150 m apart from threshold (AGA 5.4).
- Aiming point takes precedence: TDZ pair within 50 m of it omitted (AGA 5.4).
Blast pad (AGA 3.7):
- Area before threshold resistant to erosion from jet exhaust or propeller wash.
- Non-load-bearing (chevrons over 60 m).
Trap: chevrons make pavement unusable for normal operations. Displaced threshold arrows do not.
