ALTRVs, MOAs and danger areas
Danger area (CAR 101.01):
- Fixed-dimension DAH airspace
- Dangerous activity can occur at specified times
Altitude reservation (ALTRV) (TC AIM RAC 2.9.1):
- Defined airspace inside controlled airspace
- Reserved for a civil or military agency, for a set period
- Fixed, or moving with the aircraft
- Published by NOTAM
- Civil: normally one aircraft. Military: more than one
- Pilots: avoid a known ALTRV
- ATC: will not clear unauthorized flights into an active ALTRV
- IFR/CVFR: standard separation
Military operations area (MOA) (TC AIM RAC 2.9.4):
- Segregates military activity from IFR traffic, flags it for VFR traffic
- Published in the DAH and on charts
| MOA | Traffic | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Active MOA | VFR | Need not avoid. Watch for military traffic |
| Active MOA | Non-participating IFR | ATC will not clear through unless IFR separation can be provided |
| Class G MOA only | Non-participating IFR or VFR | May operate without ATC clearance |
Trap: ALTRV is keep-out (ATC won't clear you in); MOA is keep-alert (fly through, watch for traffic).
