Arrival sequence, transit and remain-outside instruction
Radio call required when destination has a control tower or Flight Service Station (TP 1102, Arrival).
Returning to land at a controlled aerodrome, in order (one unit at a time):
- ATIS: first unit.
- Tower: contact before entering control zone. State intent: land or transit (TP 1102, Radio Communication: Tower Control Arriving).
Remain outside (NAV CANADA VFR Phraseology, Remain Outside of Class D Airspace):
- Contact made before entering Class D: may be told to remain outside control zone due to traffic.
- Read instruction back.
Transit without landing (TP 1102, Radio Communication: Transiting a Control Zone; TP 1102, The Circuit: Leaving the Circuit (Controlled Airports)):
- Initial call as arrival; state transit.
- Radio contact with zone's tower compulsory.
- Under its control until clear of zone.
- ATC may vector or route, or refuse entry outright (heavy traffic, poor weather).
Trap: entering zone after "remain outside" because field is visible.
