ATF, UNICOM & runway status
An aerodrome traffic frequency (ATF) is the self-announce frequency at an uncontrolled aerodrome with no mandatory frequency (MF).
- No MF published: self-announce on the ATF, broadcast intentions at the same points (TC AIM RAC 4.5).
- MF: calls compulsory. ATF: just the frequency to announce on.
- Listening watch on the ATF works the same way (TC AIM RAC 4.5.1).
Which frequency:
| Situation | Frequency | Cite |
|---|---|---|
| ATF designated: active uncontrolled aerodrome not meeting MF traffic criteria | Normally UNICOM; 123.2 MHz where no UNICOM |
RAC 4.5.5 |
| Outside MF's published hours | Revert to ATF procedures | RAC 4.5.1 |
| Towered or FSS aerodrome, facility closed | Designated ATF (some aerodromes) | RAC 4.5.1 |
| Neither MF nor ATF published | 123.2 MHz: broadcast position and intentions |
RAC 4.5.1 |
Coverage and equipment:
- ATF can cover a corridor between two uncontrolled aerodromes, not just the ring around one. Specified in CFS or AIP Canada Supplement (RAC 4.5.5).
- Aerodromes without an MF do not require two-way radio. Watch for traffic not calling in.
UNICOM (TC AIM RAC 1.2.1):
- Private agency air-ground facility at uncontrolled aerodromes.
- Operates on one of (MHz):
122.7, 122.8, 123.0, 123.3, 123.5, 122.35, 122.95, 123.35, 122.725, 122.775, 122.825. - Passes traffic and field information.
- Not ATC. No clearances.
- Using its information is entirely pilot's call. TC takes no responsibility for use of a UNICOM frequency.
Runway status on an ATF: the vehicle operator, if there is one.
- Radio-equipped vehicle on field: contact operator on the ATF for runway status and other traffic (RAC 4.5.1).
- Operator is trained and radiotelephone-licensed (RAC 4.5.5).
- Operator gives vehicle positions, other aircraft positions on the manoeuvring area, runway condition if known.
- Operator issues no instructions or clearance (RAC 4.5.5).
- No reply (NORDO) from UNICOM or vehicle operator, or runway condition unknown: pilot visually confirms the runway before landing or taking off (RAC 4.5.5).
Trap: silence on the ATF does not mean empty area; a NORDO aircraft may be operating there legitimately. No answer means confirming the runway is your job.
