Abnormal occurrence inspection and journey log entry
An abnormal occurrence (bird strike, hard landing, overspeed, anything outside normal operation) triggers two duties: inspect the aircraft, make a journey log entry.
Inspection before next take-off (CAR 605.88(1)):
- No take-off until inspected for damage per Appendix G of the Aircraft Equipment and Maintenance Standards.
- No disassembly needed: pilot-in-command may inspect (CAR 605.88(2)).
- Disassembly needed: PIC exception does not apply. Appendix G governs who inspects.
- Journey log entry does not replace inspection.
Journey log entry (CAR 605.94(1), Schedule I):
| Item | Entry |
|---|---|
| 6 | Particulars of the abnormal occurrence |
| 9 | Any defect that becomes apparent during flight (separate entry) |
- Made by the PIC.
- Timing: as soon as practicable, at the latest before the next flight.
- Occurrence during maintenance, not in flight: the operator at the time makes the entry, not the PIC.
Trap: abnormal occurrence log entry is due before the next flight, not later.
