NORDO / RONLY procedures, uncontrolled aerodrome
NORDO (no radio) or RONLY (receiver-only) may fly to or from an uncontrolled aerodrome inside an MF area only if all four are met (CAR 602.97(3)):
- Ground station in operation at the aerodrome (FSS, CARS, or RCO providing RAAS).
- Prior notice of intention to that ground station by telephone or in person, never radio (TC AIM RAC 4.5.8.1).
- Takeoff: ascertain by visual observation no likelihood of collision with another aircraft or vehicle.
- Landing: enter circuit from a position requiring at least two sides of a rectangular circuit before turning final (TC AIM RAC 4.5.8.2, Figure 4.8).
RONLY extra duty: keep a listening watch on the MF while on the manoeuvring area or within the MF area (RAC 4.5.8.3).
Traffic window, NORDO aircraft (RAC 4.5.7):
| Phase | Counted as traffic from | Counted as traffic until |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | 5 min before ETA | 10 min after |
| Departure | Just before departure | 10 min after, or until observed or reported clear of MF area |
Trap: copying the controlled-aerodrome NORDO procedure (inform tower, arrange visual signals; RAC 4.2.10, 4.4.5). Uncontrolled has no tower: prior phone call replaces it, two-sides rule replaces ATC separation.
