Supplemental oxygen requirements
Oxygen use and supply by cabin-pressure altitude:
| Cabin altitude | Crew use (CAR 605.32) | Passenger use (CAR 605.32) | Supply (CAR 605.31) |
|---|---|---|---|
| At or below 10,000 ft | none | none | - |
| Above 10,000 up to 13,000 ft | when flight at that altitude lasts more than 30 min | none | enough for those required to use it, plus 10% of passengers, minimum one |
| Above 13,000 ft | whole time | whole time | covers all persons on board |
- Below 13,000 ft: only crew, only if 10,000-13,000 ft lasts more than 30 min. Shorter hop needs nothing.
- Above 13,000 ft: everyone on board immediately, no 30-minute grace.
- 10,000 to 13,000 ft supply: 9 or fewer passengers = one.
- Pressurized aircraft: enough to reach a suitable aerodrome after cabin-pressurization failure at the most critical point of the flight (CAR 605.31(2)).
Pilot's mask (CAR 605.32(3)): pilot at controls wears mask:
| Masks | Altitude |
|---|---|
| No quick-donning | at or above FL 250 |
| Quick-donning | above FL 410 |
Regulator (PHAK ch.7), most regulators approved to 40,000 ft:
- 8,000 ft or less: cabin air 100%, cylinder oxygen 0%.
- 100% oxygen at about 34,000 ft cabin altitude.
Trap: 10,000 ft is not the always-required line (full-time use starts above 13,000 ft); middle band has the 30-minute condition; do not swap crew and passenger rules.
