Portable ELT signal optimization
| ELT type | Antenna | Reposition after crash |
|---|---|---|
| Portable | Own auxiliary antenna, safely removable from wreckage | Yes: extends signal range |
| Fixed | Wired to airframe | Not applicable |
| Action | How | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Get it high | Highest point, level surface; fewer obstructions between antenna and horizon | Ground level to 2.44 m (8 ft) adds 20 to 40 percent range |
| Orient antenna | Vertical | Optimum radiation pattern |
| Reflective surface | Set on metal or level aircraft wing | Adds reflectivity; extends range |
Body-heat myth:
- Body warmth in cold does not meaningfully boost battery output.
- Body absorbs signal energy: can cut range.
Trap: warming ELT against body in cold feels helpful but can cut range.
