Post-landing taxi, runway exit & HIRO
Controlled airport: ATC authorization needed to taxi on the manoeuvring area after landing (TC AIM RAC 4.4.4).
Runway exit:
- No exit instructions: continue in landing direction to nearest suitable taxiway, exit without delay.
- Exit instructions: in landing clearance or given separately. If unable to comply, tell ATC as soon as safely able (NAV CANADA VFR Phraseology).
- Never exit onto another runway unless ATC instructs or authorizes it.
- Instructed onto another runway: get further taxi authorization, remain on tower frequency until told to change to ground.
- Dead-end runway: expect backtrack instruction.
"Clear of the runway": all parts of aircraft past:
| Runway marking | Clear when |
|---|---|
| Taxi holding position line | Past the line |
| No line marked | At least 200 ft (61 m) from runway edge |
- Short of that: not clear.
180-degree turn or taxiing back down the runway (backtrack, reposition for takeoff):
- As quickly as consistent with safety.
- Until runway cleared, no traffic has landing priority over you.
Ground handoff:
- Normally not changed to ground control until off the active runway(s).
- Good airmanship: keep taxiing clear of the hold position while calling ground, so exit stays open for aircraft behind.
- Handoff phraseology: CONTACT GROUND (frequency) NOW/WHEN OFF/AT (unit name).
- Acknowledge ground's taxi instructions.
- Readback (TC AIM RAC 4.4.4; VFR Phraseology Readback/Hearback):
| Instruction | Readback |
|---|---|
| HOLD, HOLD SHORT | Required (only these) |
| Enter, cross, backtrack, line-up | Good practice |
- Down time (time left runway): tower gives it only when asked.
- Cannot raise ground control:
- Stop. Do not cross any runway without explicit ATC authorization.
- Try previous working frequency.
- Still no contact: watch for visual signals.
HIRO (High Intensity Runway Operations):
- Purpose: disciplined pilot and controller procedures at high-density airports, raising efficiency and runway capacity (TC AIM RAC 4.4.10).
- Tactical objective: minimize runway occupancy time, so the next arrival crosses the threshold with a minimum interval.
- Arrival: leave the runway without delay at the exit nominated in the approach briefing.
- High-speed exits have specific maximum design speeds.
Trap: exiting onto another runway without ATC instruction. Default clearance reaches only nearest taxiway; second runway always needs separate instruction or authorization. Under HIRO, never stop on the runway after landing; clear it at the nominated exit.
