|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (LRA 5.3.2) | Aircraft fully complies with all airworthiness standards | Categories | Yes (Chicago Convention art. 31) | Any ICAO contracting state, no further approval |
| Special (TP 1102; LRA 5.3.3) | Aircraft does not meet all standard C of A requirements but is fit and safe for flight | Classifications | No | Needs that country's own authorization |
Standard C of A issued for:

| Aeroplanes | Normal, utility, aerobatic, commuter, transport |
| Rotorcraft | Normal, transport |
- Aeroplane categories group by intended use or operating limitations (CAR 101.01(1)).
- Also issued for gliders, powered gliders, airships, manned free balloons (LRA 5.3.2).
- Transfer: passes with aircraft on sale or lease while registered in Canada.
- International: Chicago Convention requires every contracting-state aircraft in international aerial navigation to hold a C of A issued or rendered valid by its state of registry (TC AIM LRA 5.2.1).
Special C of A, four classifications (LRA 5.3.3):
- Restricted
- Amateur-built
- Limited
- Owner-maintenance: only aircraft types and models listed in CAR Standard 507, Appendix H
Trap: sale does not end a standard C of A; special C of A is not an international passport.
