Takeoff clearance modifiers and discretion
A modifier changes how the takeoff starts or who owns safety.
| Modifier | Meaning | Pilot duty |
|---|---|---|
immediate |
Taxi onto runway and take off in one continuous movement | If that would hurt operations: say "unable", hold short, wait for standard clearance |
take off at your discretion |
Uncontrolled areas of the airport (often helicopters, seaplanes) | Pilot owns safety and separation; comply as soon as safely able |
- Static takeoff (full stop after lining up, before rolling) or delay in takeoff: tell ATC when requesting the clearance, not after lining up (RAC 4.2.8).
- FSS advisory ending "taxi and take off at your discretion": pilot's decision. FSS does not control air traffic. Free to taxi and take off if radio procedures followed and no traffic conflict exists (TP 1102, Radio Communication: Advisory Service).
Trap: declining an immediate clearance by lining up anyway. Say "unable" and hold short.
