Which technical records to keep, protect, retain and transfer
Separate technical records (CAR 605.92(1)(b)), owner keeps one for each:
- Airframe
- Each installed engine
- Each variable-pitch propeller
Records may be split per component installed in airframe, engine, or propeller (CAR 605.92(2)).
Owner also keeps empty weight and balance report meeting Standard 571 (CAR 605.92(1)(c)). Exception: fleet empty weight and balance program under 706.06(3).
Folding records in (CAR 605.92(3)): ALL entries (airframe, engine, propeller, weight-and-balance) may go in the journey log instead. Applies to:
- Balloon
- Glider
- Aircraft on special C of A in owner-maintenance or amateur-built classification
Protect and retain:
| Rule | Requirement | Cite |
|---|---|---|
| Protect | Owner takes all necessary measures against damage and loss | 605.93(3) |
| Retention period (all records except journey log) | Period set out in Aircraft Equipment and Maintenance Standards | 605.96(4) |
| Owner duty | Owner must maintain and retain each record until aircraft no longer registered | Standard 625.96(1) |
Other events:
| Event | Result | Cite |
|---|---|---|
| Component installed on higher assembly | Its technical record becomes part of higher assembly's record | 605.96(3) |
| Sale of aircraft, airframe, engine, propeller, or appliance | Deliver all related technical records to buyer at time of transfer | 605.97 |
Trap: retention is not a fixed number of years. Runs until aircraft no longer registered.
