Visual separation
Visual separation (GEN 5.1): ATC separates aircraft visually in VMC, apart from surveillance equipment.
| Aircraft | How |
|---|---|
| VFR | On seeing a potential conflict, ATC issues clearances, instructions, or information to help aircraft see or avoid each other |
| IFR or CVFR | Pilot reports other traffic in sight; ATC clears flight, instructs pilot to provide own separation by manoeuvring as needed |
- Class C: visual separation may be used once pilot reports preceding aircraft in sight and is instructed to follow it (RAC 5.8(b)(vi)).
Trap: treating visual separation as ATC's default. Used in VMC; for VFR, ATC still issues the clearances, instructions, or information above.
