Wildlife and farm overflight minimums
Stay above 2,000 ft AGL over fur and poultry farms, herds of wildlife animals, wildlife refuges/bird sanctuaries, parks and reserves. Low flying disturbs and can injure animals (RAC 1.10.2). TC AIM wording differs:
| Area | Cite | TC AIM wording | Chart | Landing/takeoff |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fur and poultry farms | RAC 1.10.1 | "avoid overflying" | - | - |
| Wildlife herds, refuges, bird sanctuaries | RAC 1.10.2 | "must not fly" | Boundaries depicted on aeronautical chart | Bird sanctuary may require permit: contact Environment and Climate Change Canada |
| Parks, reserves, refuges | RAC 1.10.3 | "should not be conducted" | Boundaries depicted on affected charts | National park or national park reserve only at prescribed locations: contact Parks Canada |
Fur and poultry farms (RAC 1.10.1):
- Poultry (including ostriches and emus) stampede when frightened.
- Foxes may eat or abandon young when excited.
- May be marked with chrome yellow and black stripes on pylons or roofs, plus red flag during whelping season (February-May).
- Avoid marked locations; extra vigilance in those months.
Wildlife herds, refuges, bird sanctuaries (RAC 1.10.2):
- Migratory Birds Regulations prohibit intentional killing of migratory birds through use of an aircraft.
Trap: confusing this 2,000 ft AGL conservation floor with CAR 602.14 built-up-area obstacle clearance (1,000 ft above highest obstacle within 2,000 ft) or the 500 ft open-country distance from persons and structures. Separate populated-area rules.
