Dust devils
Dust devils are dust-filled vortices (whirlwinds) created by strong surface heating, generally smaller and less intense than a tornado (AWH 16.2.6.3.1).
- Where: usually at the interface between different surface types (asphalt and dirt, irrigated fields and dirt roads). Typically clear skies and light winds.
- Life: usually a few minutes.
- Strength: can lift debris, damage or destroy small structures.
- Visibility: not all easily visible; some carry little or no debris.
- Action: avoid; never fly through one. Scan takeoff and landing areas.
Trap: treating a dust devil as harmless because it is smaller than a tornado, or assuming a clear view means none is there.
