Thunderstorm information sources
Storm information sources: other pilots, ATC, own radar.
| Source | Rule | Cite |
|---|---|---|
| PIREPs | Timely thunderstorm PIREP lets everyone decide earlier. Listen on frequency for others' PIREPs and deviation requests. Give own PIREP of conditions found. | AIR 2.7.1; FAA AWH 22.8.2 |
| ATC | Do not assume ATC offers radar guidance or deviation around a cell. Ask. Weather-avoidance help may be limited as separation comes first. | FAA AWH 22.8.2; TC AIM MET 1.3.8 |
| Airborne radar | Occasionally tilt antenna up and down. Can reveal hail or a growing cell a level scan misses. | AIR 2.7.2(h) |
Wind shear near a storm (AIR 2.8):
- Advise ATS and warn others by PIREP as soon as experienced.
- Heed other pilots' wind-shear reports: one may be the only warning.
- Consider alternate actions when wind shear reported.
Trap: assuming ATC vectors around a storm, or waiting for another pilot's warning before reporting own wind shear.
