Weather service providers & CFPS
| Provider | Role | Cite |
|---|---|---|
| NAV CANADA | Provides aviation weather | MET 1.1.2 |
| NAV CANADA | Sets observation/forecast locations, disseminates them | MET 1.1 |
| ECCC | Produces forecasts, under contract | MET 1.1 |
| Other providers | Cover light-traffic or private aerodromes | MET 1.1 |
| DND | Arranges weather at military aerodromes | MET 1.1 |
CFPS (Collaborative Flight Planning Service) is NAV CANADA's online self-serve web site: weather products, NOTAM, flight plan filing (MET 1.1.3).
- U.S. METAR/SPECI/TAF must come from aviationweather.gov, not CFPS (MET 1.1.3).
- AWIS = Aviation Weather Information Service (AIM GEN index l.2466, MET 1.1.3).
- CFPS also carries WxCam (NAV CANADA) and Webcam (non-NAV CANADA) (MET 1.2.3(e)-(f)).
- CFPS can display an FB upper-wind message differently from its coded format; ask the FIC to interpret (MET 9.2).
Weather services not carried in the flight publications are of unknown performance: usable for VFR flights at the pilot's discretion, but never in support of instrument flight procedures (MET 1.2.3).
Trap: crediting the public Environment Canada forecast instead of NAV CANADA for aviation weather; expecting a briefing from CFPS (self-serve) rather than the staffed FIC; using an unpublished weather service in support of instrument flight procedures.
