Reading a CFS entry
The Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) gives one packed entry per aerodrome: elevation, runways, radio frequencies, fuel. Each line has a label: find label, read value.
Publication:
- In law, an aeronautical information publication, published under authority of the Minister of Transport and the Minister of National Defence.
- Supplements en route charts and Canada Air Pilot (CAR 101.01(1)).
- Carries VFR information not suited to a visual chart (TC AIM MAP 2.5.3).
- IFR aerodrome/facilities directory for IFR airports (TC AIM MAP 2.6).
Entry labels:
| Label | Gives | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ELEV | Aerodrome elevation, feet ASL | Used for circuit height and density altitude |
| RWY | Identifier (08/26), length (ft), surface |
Numbering: see runway-markings |
| MF | Mandatory frequency, then radius (MF 122.8 5NM) |
Meaning and area: see mf-area-definition |
| FUEL, HRS | Fuel grades available; hours of operation (UTC) | Not guaranteed: confirm with aerodrome operator before use (TC AIM AGA 2.1) |
MF line:
- Aircraft in the area need working two-way radio.
- Not ATIS, UNICOM (RAC 1.2.1), or tower/ground.
- Controlled aerodrome: check CFS before initial contact to see whether call goes to Ground, Clearance Delivery, or Tower.
Other exam items (sample exam Q83): circuit direction, PAPI, customs, FSS, fuel grades.
Layout (field order, abbreviations, fuel-grade codes) changes between editions: confirm against current CFS.
Trap: wrong field, e.g. ATIS frequency for MF, or field elevation for runway length; confusable numbers all sit in one entry.
