Choosing a departure procedure
| Procedure | Method | Pro | Con | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Overhead departure | Climb near airport to cruising altitude, then set heading overhead field | Known starting fix | Costs time, fuel; can conflict with traffic | Featureless terrain or limited visibility |
| Geographic point procedure | Set heading at distinct landmark a short distance from airport | Departure first, set heading second | Point must be distinct, easy to find | Busy airports or airspace restrictions |
| En route climb | Take off, turn to intercept track at safe altitude, climb en route | Quick, direct | Busy; hard to tell exactly when established on track | n/a |
Trap: choosing a geographic point that is not distinct or easy to find.
