DF and VDF assistance
Ground-station radio help when lost.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| DF steer (DF guidance) | Heading toward a fix |
| VDF | VHF direction finding |
DF steer (AC 100-001 Glossary, DF guidance):
- Headings provided by direction-finding-equipped facilities.
- Followed, leads to a predetermined point, such as the radio direction-finding station or an airport.
- Given to aircraft in distress or on request.
Use VDF:
- Call a VHF/DF-equipped tower or FSS on the frequency listed in the CFS.
- Services available:
- Heading to its site
- Bearing from the site
- Track-out assistance
- ETA or distance
- Full fix: combine with a second VDF site, a VOR radial, or an NDB bearing.
Controller offers DF assistance instead:
- Hold transmit key down a few seconds, then release, so station can plot you.
- Repeat on a new heading if asked.
Trap: DF steer = heading TO a point (station or airport); single DF contact is not a position fix.
