In-flight log & cockpit checks
In cruise, at regular intervals:
- run a cockpit check (pilot's own instrument scan): engine and systems instruments, and fuel burn matches expected rate
- make a log entry
Essentials only (little time to write in the air):
| # | Entry |
|---|---|
| 1 | Time off and flight-plan opening time |
| 2 | Set-heading time |
| 3 | Each compass heading, three digits (e.g. 037) |
| 4 | Time each new compass heading set |
| 5 | ETA at planned turning points and destination |
| 6 | Time over or abeam check-points and turning points |
| 7 | New ground speeds and revised ETAs |
- Pilot's own private record.
- Separate from radio position and arrival reports.
Trap: treating the cockpit check as a one-off (it repeats through cruise); heading logged as two digits (leading zero dropped); fly and log three digits (037, not 37).
