Lost procedures, uncertain of your position
Fixed sequence, not random search:
- Check for error first. Hold current heading.
- Heading indicator vs compass mismatch: off track fast.
- Nav log: drift correction or variation applied wrong way; magnetic or true heading flown instead of compass heading; wind shift.
- Error found: estimate where it took you. Still close to last known position with good landmarks behind: consider returning.
- Don't burn fuel wandering.
- Admit lost. Fly toward a major line feature: coastline, railroad, highway.
- Decide which way to turn on reaching it.
- Climb. More altitude = farther view, more radio range, more radar coverage.
- Transmit.
- Once in contact, give: general position, fuel remaining, assistance needed, proposed action.
- ATC can offer radar assistance.
- Working ADF or VOR: get line of position or fix yourself.
- Two navaids: plot crossing azimuths.
- Extreme emergency.
- MAYDAY on 121.5 MHz, then listen there for instructions.
- Transponder on, code 7700.
- Still unresolved?
- Don't fly until tanks run dry or into an unseen obstacle.
- Precautionary landing beats that, especially in poor weather.
Trap: chasing landmark after landmark with new headings wastes fuel; fly toward a major feature instead.
