NAVAID serviceability and reporting
NAVAID status NOTAMs (TC AIM COM 4.2):
| NOTAM | Meaning | Use? |
|---|---|---|
| Removed from service | Identifier removed; may be unreliable though still transmitting | Do not use |
| "Unmonitored" | Not monitored | May use; self-monitor to confirm proper operation |
Before use:
- Check NOTAMs for outages (TC AIM COM 4.2(a)).
- Remote aerodrome, or one with a CARS: contact observer-communicator or aerodrome operator for NAVAID status (TC AIM COM 4.2(a)).
- Receiver properly tuned, aurally confirm identifier, visually confirm correct indicator (TC AIM COM 4.2(b)-(c)).
VOR identification (TP 1102:5799; TC AIM COM 4.5(c)): station ID is Morse code or recorded voice ID.
VOR alarm (OFF) flag (PHAK ch.16) shows when signal strength is inadequate:
- Too far from station
- Too low for line of sight
Reporting (TC AIM COM 4.3):
- Report any NAVAID failure or abnormality to the appropriate ATS facility.
- Airborne reporting impractical: report after landing.
Trap: trusting a NAVAID because it still transmits. Identifier removed: do not use.
