Running the set-heading routine
Set-heading routine (once established over the set-heading point on the planned compass heading):
- Record the time. Basis for all later estimates and ETAs.
- Check visual angle of departure. Hold the heading.
- Compare heading indicator with compass. Check major map features. Confirms heading.
- Calculate estimate for first check-point and ETA for end of leg.
Trap: skipping the set-heading time. Every estimate, ETA, and later ground speed check chains off it; skipped or misrecorded, all are off.
