Unit conversion factors
TC AIM GEN Table 1.6: from unit x factor = into unit. Each direction is its own row. Never divide or use the other direction's factor.
Distance and length:
| From | Into | x |
|---|---|---|
| NM | km | 1.852 |
| km | NM | 0.540 |
| NM | SM | 1.152 |
| SM | NM | 0.868 |
| SM | km | 1.609 |
| km | SM | 0.621 |
| m | ft | 3.281 |
| ft | m | 0.305 |
Fuel volume and weight:
| From | Into | x |
|---|---|---|
| US gal | L | 3.785 |
| L | US gal | 0.264 |
| imp gal | L | 4.546 |
| L | imp gal | 0.220 |
| imp gal | US gal | 1.201 |
| US gal | imp gal | 0.833 |
| kg | lb | 2.205 |
| lb | kg | 0.454 |
Fuel density:
- kg/L to lb/US gal: x8.333
- kg/L to lb/imp gal: x10.023
Speed (TC AIM GEN Table 1.6; PHAK ch.16):
- Knots to mph: x1.152 (1 kt = 1 NM/h, so the NM-to-SM row).
- Rule of thumb: 1.15. Example: 20 kt = 23 mph.
Imperial vs US gallon (AC 100-001 glossary):
1 imp gal = 1.201 US gal1 US gal = 3.785 L1 imp gal = 4.546 L- Check: imp gal is bigger, so imp to US factor is above 1.
Trap: reverse-direction row (or dividing), or imp-gallon factor where US gallons asked (or vice versa).
